Anticipation Or Dread

It was night time on the day when Jesus rose from the dead. Peter and John had returned from their run to the tomb, which was found to be empty. They were astonished. Bewildered. Confused. But their inward condition had not changed. They will still filled with fear and dread.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” John 20:19

We know the full story of what was going on at that moment! Jesus was alive. The disciples were living through the greatest day in human history. It was the day that would change their world for eternity. But at that moment, they could not see it.

Can you see them? Hidden behind lock doors. Afraid. Filled with dread of what might happen next.

The next moment, they find themselves staring at Jesus in resurrected form. He shows up in their room, and speaks to them ‘Peace’. All of the sudden, the room was filled with an entirely different presence. The power of the Holy Spirit. The peace of God breathed upon their lives. The presence of Jesus, in all the glory of the fact of his resurrection.

Seconds before, all they could imagine was the worst. Instead, what God delivered to them was his best There is so much hidden in this moment that is applicable to my life.

  1. Dread is an inward sign that I am living in doubt. It’s almost as if I am saying, ‘God I can’t count on you to handle my future.’ Fear twists my soul into knots and keeps me locked into my past.

  2. Dread is an expectation of the worst, rather than an anticipation of God’s best. These disciples had walked with the Son of God for three years. They watched him perform unbelievable miracles. Yet they still had an inward conditioning to believe that the worst was yet ahead.

  3. Joy is the opposite of dread. It is the disposition of faith that anticipates what God is going to do next. It’s the Holy Spirit imparted conviction that God is not only able, he is active in creating amazing things for me in my future.

It’s possible that you are seconds away from an amazing breakthrough of God’s power in your life. Are you locked away in your fears, in dread of the future? Or are you leaning forward in joy anticipating what God is going to do next?
